Amos Nachoum

Amos Nachoum is an explorer, photojournalist, expedition leader and a guy who just likes to have a good time and travel around our amazing planet.

He was originally born in Israel. After serving 12 years in the Israeli special forces, he let his dreams carry him away to explore the world where he fell in love with diving and photography.

Presently Amos resides in San Francisco. From here he manages his triple duties as Adventure Editor of Fathoms Magazine, freelance photographer specializing in big animals and extreme diving photography, and as an expedition leader of his own travel company BigAnimals Photography Expeditions.

Amos' photography and photo essays have been published in National Geographic, Time, Conde nast Traveler, Outside, Men's Journal, Outdoor Photographer and all of the diving magazines in the USA, Europe and Japan.

For the first time in the dive travel industry, Amos has designed and will lead five diving & photography expeditions in a course of the next two years to the North Pole, High Arctic and Antarctica. When asked why go so far North or South? Why now? he answered:

"Because there is water there – and if there is water, there is wildlife. Perhaps some species have never been identified or photographed. The edges of the earth were out of reach for most of us, only because we did not have the equipment and the means to go there. That is not the case anymore. It is only our perception that hold us back.

"It is the best time to start to explore these two remote and amazing environments. Simply because today, more than anytime in history, we have the best specially designed equipment to handle the cold water and provide the safety margin that is required under these challenging conditions. We have selected the ice breaker "Yamal" that can bring us safely to our remote and frozen destinations. We have superb dry suits for in-water protection. Last, but not least, for our breathing apparatus we have regulators specifically design to operate flawlessly in freezing water. I have experimented with a few and the Atomic Aquatics M1 does very well for me. Never freezes and never free flows – always easy to breath when I need it most. I've learn to count on it during five missions to Antarctica, so I do not leave home without it on my way the North Pole too." said Amos.
